Rotary peeling of poplar into veneer for use in the production of baskets, punnets and crates for fruit and vegetables has existed in East Anglia for decades.
As part of that industry, Aston Timber Products Ltd was founded in 1983 and operates from its own freehold factory on the boundaries of Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. As well as veneers and slats for baskets and crates, tobacco "spills" once used in coal burning households were, and still are, a regular product line. The use of "spills" however has broadened from a simple tobacco product into being a general purpose safety lighter principally in academic and scientific organizations.
The crate market too has changed and is now progressively satisfied from cardboard and plastic. New markets had to be developed and now production is mainly veneer sheets and slats for use in the Brick and Concrete Product industries as packaging.
We continue to broaden and develop our product range and will consider any new projects in timber packaging that are both economically and environmentally sound.
Several years ago as part of that development, the company diversified into the production of pallet collars and is now the leading UK manufacturer. We specialize in the manufacture of non-standard sizes and quantities of pallet collars and accessories and, with the exception of standard size collars, all our production is made to order.
Our range of reusable containers and accessories is being continuously extended to meet customer's requirements.
We require large quantities of poplar logs and purchase from all over the UK those logs that meet our detailed specifications and are available to us.
Today the company is run by the two Nigels. Nigel Kennard is managing director and looks after the production and purchasing departments, while Nigel Darbyshire is responsible for all sales and promotions.
